In recent weeks we conducted extensive interviews with Treyarch developers to learn that Black Ops has two main goals. The game is a love letter to Black Ops 2 (2012), the FPS that many players consider to be the pinnacle of the sub-franchise. It is also a smart extension of Black Ops 6 (2024), the shooter which introduced Omnimovement and brought back elements like classic prestige and round based zombies.

Call of Duty: Warzone 1.0

Call of Duty Warzone is a unique entry to the franchise. It's still up to date, even though the game is a few years old. This is Call of Duty's take on battle royales in response to the changing multiplayer environment characterized by free-to play battle royales such as Fortnite and Apex legends. The loot system is streamlined, a clever way to rejoin the Gulag fight has been added, and the battle royale world is slashed with a dang-tact knife.

Warzone 2.0 was released alongside 2022’s Modern Warfare 2. It beat out its predecessor Call of Duty Warzone Caldera, and has a dedicated single player DMZ mode if that's what you want. In our Call Of Duty: Warzone2.0 review, we described it as "a steady march towards a new horizon" for Call of Duty.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2

Treyarch's original Black Ops trilogy allowed Treyarch to be weird. It was all the more enjoyable for it. (And it paved the path for the sixth title, which went down a similarly similar route). Call of Duty Black Ops 2 marks the first and only time that COD has experimented with multiple endings. The story is drastically altered by completing Strike Force missions or achieving certain objectives on the main levels. This adds depth to the game and gives players a reason for returning after the credits.

Pick 10 is a more lasting and important introduction to multiplayer. It gives you greater control over your loadouts and playstyles, allowing for greater customization. This entry, while not all changes would be adopted, is a good example of Call of Duty and one that experiments to the point of standing out. In our Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 Review, we stated that the game "improves the formula in each and every one of its gameplay modes".

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had to step into some very big shoes as a follow-up. The fact that it is the closest to achieving that feat speaks volumes about its quality. The single-player ups the spectacle, without sacrificing the pace. Meanwhile, the multiplayer features the most amazing tiny map ever: Rust.

There are a few minor mistakes, like the Tactical Nuke Killstreak or the No Russian Mission in the Campaign, that make it not the best. It's difficult to be bothered by these minor issues, when the iconic moments, such as storming the Gulag to rescue a prisoner of importance, are never ending.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6

Black Ops is usually the most ambitious campaign in the series, combining a spy thriller feel with trippy scenes that make you wonder what's real. Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 picks up the story from Call Of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War. The action is now set in the 1990s, during the Gulf War. There are many references to real history in this game, but they serve as a backdrop for a conspiracy plot that mixes nonlinear levels with a thrilling heist and psychological horror.

The multiplayer is also better than ever. The "omnimovement", a fast-paced movement, allows you to control your slides and dives without the messy overcorrections of the previous entry in the series. (Read our Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Review for more information!). There's no dull moment with this return to form, especially with the two Zombies maps that are available at launch. They're teeming full of secrets. Find out more in our Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 Review, where we stated that the game "truly evolves what this franchise can be".
